Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT)

Institute for Applied Materials

The Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT) is one of the largest technical universities in Germany with more than 25,000 students studying at undergraduate and post-graduate levels. The Institute of Applied Materials within KIT is focused on advancing research into material science and material engineering. Additive manufacturing (AM) features heavily in this research, with an emphasis on metal materials for the L-PBF, developing new and diverse metal material capabilities for additive processes.

Oregon State University

Oregon State University has installed a CREATOR within its Material Science Department. The system is being used to conduct research into the design and advanced manufacture of high temperature and iron-and nickel-based alloys, specifically powder metallurgy, microstructural and textural studies are being considered to develop new materials with multi-functionality. The focus of the work at Oregon State is on additive manufacturing processes for Selective Laser Melting of ferrous and non-ferrous alloys, metal matrix composites and functionally graded alloys.

Technische Hochschule Mittelhessen

Laboratory for Production Technology

The CREATOR has been installed at Technische Hochschule Mittelhessen, within a lab environment equipped with a range of production technology. The CREATOR is being used at this technical institute to provide students with work experience in a production environment. The curriculum includes working on the production of individual parts, how printed components fit into assemblies and end products, testing and measurement of manufactured parts and products, and monitoring efficiency, process reliability and quality targets.

Laser Zentrum Hannover

At Laser Zentrum Hannover, the CREATOR is being used to consider how Additive Manufacturing can be used for construction applications. The research work is covering a range of areas, including, but not limited to:

  • Specifications of components and processes
  • Design and functional optimization of components
  • Computer-aided simulation and physical validation for quality assurance
  • Integration of additive manufacturing in to different process chain approaches to increase productivity
  • Identification of potential business opportunities and derivation of new business models

Fraunhofer IAPT

The CUBE has been installed at Fraunhofer IAPT. The system is being used in R&D. Additive Manfacturing by Direct Metal Deposition (DMD) is particularly investigated. Fraunhofer IAPT — together with Coherent|OR Laser — is working on an innovative approach for making the DMD process even more predictable and more user-friendly. Part of this approach is a highly efficient process simulation, which can be run based on CAD data or DMD tool-paths.

Ruhr University Bochum

The LAT at Ruhr University Bochum (Chair of Applied Laser Technologies, University Bochum) collaborates with Coherent | OR Laser on the integration of highly sensitive sensor systems into a CUBE machine. The acquired data (heat-input and geometry) is currently processed offline, but shall be integrated into a closed-loop control in the future.

University of Bayreuth

The CREATOR RA is installed at the University of Bayreuth, within the additive manufacturing lab on the Chair of Manufacturing and Remanufacturing Technology. The university provides SMEs with applied experience in production and industry environment, e.g. in the development of use cases for small-lots, tools and spare parts.  The purpose of the University of Bayreuth is to make progress with Coherent | OR Laser in the development of safety and quality assurance strategies and systems as well as the implementation of additive manufacturing in other industries.
